OGT DAILY Day One Hundred and Eighty TELLING STORIES

Helping people tell their stories elevates them above the struggles that keep them back and empowers them.   Here are two great examples I experienced tonight:

SWIM TEAM - a film at the IFC Center through next week.  Catch it before its gone!
http://www.swimteamthefilm.com/
Directed and Produced by Lara Stolman, Edited and Produced by (my friend) Ann Collins.
Also produced by Shanna Belott with Cinemaphotographer Laela Kilbourne and musical score by Mark Suozzo.

This effective and affecting feature documentary tells the story of a Perth Amboy swim team made up entirely of youth on the autism spectrum.  While it focuses on only three of the seventeen team members, the hardships and real triumphs of life for these kids seems applicable to any family struggling to live with difference and disability.   As you watch them become competitive swimmers and falter as they must go to meets it is both exhilarating and heart rending.  I'd recommend it to anyone who has raised a child, but especially for parents, teachers, therapists and all others who know the special joys and trials of AS.

The other project I heard about on NPR tonight about photographer Amy Berbert who set out to document every murder that occurred in Baltimore, a city with a higher murder rate than Chicago, during 2016.  Amy is shooting the location of every murder, "the same time, same place, only one year later."  Berbert sees this exercise as giving voice to those who would otherwise remain voiceless and to help make politicians and legislators aware of this public health issue.  It may not empower those who have died, but it makes sure they are not just forgotten as another statistic and may empower those in their communities.
