This morning was my first bike ride of the year and I rode all the way to the Atlantic Ocean on the National Seashore bike path. It's a magical fairy land of a ride through a pine and oak forest covered with moss, which takes you to Coast Guard beach with its rolling waves and seals and high dunes. I've been coming to the Cape for 30 years now and this is my favorite morning ride. 3 miles across the width of the Cape from the bayside where we stay to the ocean. It takes me about twenty minutes each way and usually I dip my toes in the cold ocean waves before making the return trip.
There is a section where it goes through the marsh over a foot bridge and the birds and wildlife are magnificent. At this time when the current administration seems set on destroying our national parks, I cannot praise the beauty of this landscape enough. It has seen better years and the forest is losing trees due to climate change, but it is such a privilege to be able to make this ride.
Everyone I met along the trail I greeted with a big, "Good Morning," just as I learned to do when hiking in the Swiss Alps with my cousins and we'd both move on with a smile on our face.
