How do you bring something into awareness? Getting people's attention; wearing bright colors; bribing them with candy and swag. I am learning the fine art of tabling for a political cause.Many thousands of years ago when I was eighteen, a family friend tried to get me to help her do tabling for the Socialist Workers Party at Northeastern University in Boston. I was so hopelessly self-involved then that I don't even remember what we were tabling for. Political action is an awareness that comes with maturity and from necessity. Everyone acknowledges that the silver lining of the rise of Trump is the awareness of political action that most progressives are now engaging in; the level of discourse around what makes our democracy. Awareness is slowly but surely growing around the #WearOrange campaign to honor the short life of Hadiya Pendleton and all those who have lost their lives to gun violence. Hunters wear safety orange so they are not shot in the woods. Wearing orange on June 2 will now forever be an awareness of the 93 deaths that occur by gun violence each day around the country. Maybe in ten years it will be automatic that we wear orange and that our elected leaders agree to sensible gun laws that protect everyone.
