So I have not been following my own advice about promoting resiliency. I have to admit to feeling pretty ragged. Not enough sleep. Not enough to eat and too much to do! In addition the weather has shifted to sweater mode over night. All the old creaks in the usual places have returned like squeaking staircase in our old house. The trick wrist, the sore lower back, the sinus headache from rain and too much computer. Amazing how the shift from warmth to cold can effect the body. Fall transition and its not even Labor Day.
But September is also the shift into activity, schedules and inward turning as we anticipate the cold and winter. The season of hibernation and dreams is full of mystery. When the light of day begins to vanish in this season (a glimpse of which we had with the eclipse) there's a chance to store away what we gained this summer in terms of not just tomatoes and zucchini and such but our own personal growth. September is a drop into dream time and mystery. For the Jewish faith there is Yom Kippur the day of atonement and turning to ancestors. Sufism is a faith based in mysticism. It is the mystical inward turning practice of Islam which emphasizes prayer and asceticism. Sufis were known for their rituals like whirling dervish dancers and the wearing of simple woolen clothing. Their poetry and music are devotional, beautiful and transporting. Rumi, Omar Khayyam and Hafez are among the most famous poets. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had world rknown for his devotional chanting before his death. Sufi messages of peace, unity, and harmony have won them friendships with other religions the world over.
