OGT DAILY Day Two Hundred and Twenty Eight RESILIENCE

In my current research for a book chapter the subject is resilience.   What a magnificent skill we have as humans.   I think of the numbers of people rushing to the aide of others in the storm waters of Houston despite losses and troubles of their own.   I think of New Orleans and its revival after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.... What makes some people more able to rise above devastating circumstances while others are crushed by the weight of their troubles?

Studies show that children born into adversity - like foster care - do better if there is at least one person in their life who acts as mentor - a grandparent, a teacher, a coach; if they learn to value learning; and if they turn to a higher power such as God, church or spiritualism.

BillKnaus, Ed.D suggests the following 10 pointers for all of us when treading the unsteady waters of our current culture:

1- Get enough sleep.
2- Exercise daily.
3- Maintain a healthy diet and weight.
4- Maintain a social network with those who you support and who support you.
5- Meet stress and challenges right away - don't procrastinate.
6- Learn to tolerate ambiguity - the unknown.
7- Cultivate higher values which can give direction to your life.
8- Learn to problem solve and tolerate frustration.  This is how we learn.
9- Believe that you can achieve what you want and take action to do so.
10- Reduce negative thinking.   Positive thinking will build.

We are all capable of resiliency.  It is a skill well worth cultivating.
