OGT DAILY Day Two Hundred and Twenty Nine ALTRUISM

Altruism is the act of giving without the expectation of any personal gain.   Classic Freudian theory has it that we are all much too selfish basically and give only for other gains.  Behaviorists speak of the generosity of primate males in the presence of others because it makes them look like better mates for the females.   I don't know about any of this.   I am married to one of the most altruistic human beings I know.   While I have lots of theories about his gaining attention for being the good guy when he bends over backwards for friends, he genuinely enjoys helping people in need whether its a friend who needs a tool or a a member of my large extended family who needs a meal.    I get mad some times because he's too generous and I end up feeling like the selfish one, but there is no changing him and I'm glad.

He's down in Houston right now.   He's there on a ob so its not entirely altruistic, but his presence will help bring clarity to his companies role in the rescue and recovery.

Altruism and resilience go hand in hand.  Those who are resilient have more to give and giving makes those who do it stronger and more happy.  Call me Pollyanna but it's true.   It's just the human thing to do.
