Weeding, grading, planting petunias and waiting for my car at the garage were the activities of the day. Weeding and grading are not so different. Cleaning up the tangled grasses and chickweed that clog up the patio (except dandelions - they're good for the bees!) and cleaning up tangled sentences in my students' thesis. Both are oddly satisfying. Weeding was the meditation of the day; after sunset with the dog sniffing at my heels. I have been known to be an obsessive weeder. With almost an acre of land that's not hard. My kids used to shout out the door, "Mom you've been out there for hours. We want our dinner!" Well what with poison ivy, yellow jacket stings and muscle strain - I don't go the distance with the weeds anymore. A little bit of weeding was just the right thing after dinner.
