Today at 4:30 before the birds. In the shower by 5:00 and on the 6:20 train the New York. I arrive at Astor Place by 7:30 and its still and quiet. Very few cars and even fewer people. Arriving at a place you know well at a time that is not usual can bring a whole new universe to light. A young man singing to himself in the Astor Place Plaza. An off-duty bus driver who walks the length of the square to throw out a tissue rather than toss it into the street. He say, "God bless you to me," because I sneezed when he walked by. Another group of young people spread out on the benches in front of St. John's University talking. It seemed a whole other time or place. No hurry. Not much noise. Al the time in the world. I was scheduled to meet a student at 8 am about her thesis, but I had an entire half hour. So I spent some time really looking at the mosaics placed on the lamp posts after 9-11.
After a day of listening to the NYU graduating students read their Art Therapy thesis projects, I headed to the Whitney Biennial to meet my daughter and continue my day of art.
