I am particularly grateful for the open access movement. As a researcher and writer I have access to two university libraries at the moment. One as a student which will end when I graduate and the other as a teacher. Without that access, I would be reliant on what is available for free in terms of articles and books open access on the web.
This seemed to be one of the original goals of the world wide web until like everything it was monetized and our personal information became part of the deal. But many forces still work to keep scientific and multiple perspectives available for learning. This could well change given the type of ethos tech giants appear to support politically right now - meaning conservative, and fear-based.
Today I needed to find the work of an obscure German art critic who wrote about children's scribbling as an extension of their breathing - Wolfgang Gözinger. I was able access a review of his book on child art from 1956 on Jstor which provides access to journals, books and other writing.
