In Rhode Island the big thing is clamshells. They're everywhere and I walk on them on the paths of the local golf course. We put them in our garden as a source of calcium.
Today as I was walking in the rain I saw they were replenishing the walks with mounds of shells.
And I was reminded once again of this tremendous natural resource coming straight out of Narragansett Bay and of others who are using it creatively. Felicia Neuhof, a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, founded Shellf Life while in school to use shell fish to create building materials like tile and flooring. I met her at a presentation on sustainability and really fell in love with the design and products.
