The OTG Daily #13 Resilience

In the face of adversity, resilience is worth its gold weight. All periods in history have their cycles of adversity and relative calm peace, but it certainly seems that the days ahead of us may be challenging. I am trying not to read to the news, but that habit dies hard.

Recently, I have had the privilege to meet some young scholars who are collecting drawings from wars zones - from both sides of the political spectrum with the intention to let those drawings speak. I am reminded of why I am an art therapist and why this profession is so powerful - even subversive in a way - because the power of the unspoken can bridge, unbridgeable gaps - to bring together a shared moments of humanity between sworn enemies. The power of drawing as well for a child who has been removed from home and living on the edge day to day, can be miraculous. The empty page and a box of crayons can offer them a space to dream, be creative, and resilient in the face of unspeakable horror and desolation.  I am reminded of a phoenix rising from the ashes.  The Red Pencil is an organization that provides art therapy to children and families who have been displaced due to war and other disasters: https://redpencil.org/.  Check them out and let me know - what are you grateful for today?
